Economy Disrupts Doctors Retirement Plans by Victoria Elliot, AMA Staff Writer, August 22, 2011. A survey finds many altering their end-of-career scenerios because of flagging investments and a changing medical system.

February 4, 2011 - the House of Delegates approved Resolution 108, which renamed the "Retired Physician Section" as the "Senior Physician Section" and changed the requirements for membership. The SPS is open to physicians 65 and older in the Dues Exempt or Active Part-Time categories. The purpose of the section was not amended; the change in name and membership requirements was so that more physicians with similiar interests, concerns and issues could be better represented within the LSMS.

In 2009, members of the former Retired Physician Section and LSMS Alliance worked together to develop the LSMS Alliance Flame of Excellence Award.  The purpose of the award is to recognize an Alliance member who has developed or instituted activities contributing to the enhancement of the health and welfare of his/her community. Each year, the award winner will be recongized at the Alliance Annual Meeting by the LSMS President. One nomination is accepted from each Parish Alliance Society on or before November 1st.

Volunteer Opportunities

First Aid Station at the Capitol
Each Legislative Session, the LSMS sponsors the First Aid Station at the Capitol. Members of the LAFP and local RNs man the Station each day. Volunteers perform non-invasive type procedures and distribute first aid items to anyone visiting the Capitol. We encourage LSMS members to volunteer their time at the station, which also allows for interaction with our senators and representatives. Shifts are 10am - 12pm and 2pm to 4pm, M - F.  A parking spot is reserved for station volunteers at the steps of the Capitol.  If you are interested, please contact Patsy Rusk, RN at 225.293.3395 or 225.939.6672.
