6.28.12 Earlier
today, the US Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality and validity
of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) which was
signed into law by President Barack Obama in March 2010. For more than
two years, many aspects of the law have been called into question and
have provided fodder for countless political debates across the nation.
Although the Louisiana State Medical Society is disappointed in the
Court’s decision, we stand ready to support patients and their
physicians during this time of change.
“Today’s
decision does not change LSMS’s mission,” explains LSMS President Dr.
Andy Blalock. “Our challenge is, and always has been, to improve our
system by making it more affordable and accessible for all Americans
without sacrificing choice and quality of care. The US is fortunate to
have the finest research facilities, clinics and hospitals, staffed by
the most highly trained and best educated physicians and health care
providers in the world. As we move forward, we must be engaged in the
process and offer solutions that protect these fundamental strengths of
our health care system.”
The
LSMS will move forward with an open minded, constructive approach to
building on the positive aspects of the law, while working with the
Louisiana Delegation and the Congress to address the strong concerns
physicians still have regarding protecting patients’ access to care,
stabilizing the Medicare program in a fiscally responsible way, and
preserving the rights of physicians’ and patients’ to choose their own
health care services.
