04.10.12 You move a hospital by departments, each department divided into pieces, the pieces labeled, from hospital beds and fetal monitors to office furniture and computer servers, each component loaded onto 18-foot trucks.

"You can't move a hospital in a tractor-trailer," said Nat Rhodes, Allied Hospital Services chief executive officer. "It takes too long to pack. It takes too long to unpack."

Things get broken. Merchandise gets lost.

In fact, you move a hospital without packing anything unless you absolutely have to, Rhodes said.
