02.13.12 A nationwide shortage of medications used to tread Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is being felt in Acadiana. Local pharmacies say they are seeing shortages of common ADHD medications including Adderall and Dexedrine and their generics, which help people focus, perform successfully in school and at work, moderate impulses and even drive safely.

Experts attribute the shortage to a combination of increasing demand, struggles to obtain enough active ingredients and tight federal regulations that limit how much of the ingredients can be distributed to manufacturers per year.

Joel Fruge, owner/pharmacist at Acadiana Prescription Shop, said he's seen the shortages for about six months, mainly for Adderall and Dexedrine. Fruge said he thinks most of the shortage is because of a lack of some main active ingredients, and the amount of supply at the pharmacy varies as they work with manufacturers to meet demand.
