10.12.11  Louisiana voters are being asked to protect with a constitutional amendment a medical professional liability insurance fund currently not under threat. Proponents say the amendment is needed to keep it that way.  The Patient's Compensation Fund offers coverage for qualified health care providers who already have either MPL insurance or self-insurance to cover the first $100,000 in liabilities. Created by state statute in 1975 and once state-funded, it is currently funded by surcharges on approximately 17,000 providers.
