Since 1975 lobbyists in the Department of Governmental Affairs have fought to keep the malpractice cap (Act 817) in place. They provide LSMS members legislative and governmental advocacy, act as a liaison between physicians and lawmakers, and regularly interact with state regulatory agencies. Representation on many state boards, committees and tasks forces within government is also provided to members.
Legal Activities & Support
The Department of Legal Affairs provides LSMS members a resource for legal information and guidance, coordinates legal activities to benefit the membership, and acts as a liaison to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. Ongoing legal support continues to be provided to the membership after having joined class action lawsuits filed in Louisiana state court against four of the largest health plans in the state. Aetna and CIGNA have agreed to a settlement. Specific information about these settlements is available on the LSMS website in the Members Only section.
Communications
The Department of Public Affairs provides media relations and communications on behalf of physicians and patients, presents a positive image of the profession with the media and the public, and works with statewide media to address health care issues from the physician's perspective. It also produces the publications listed below, keep LSMS members abreast of the latest information on professional issues.
