Annual Meeting Held at Houmas House
The site of the Alliance Annual Meeting was the Houmas House Plantation that had its beginnings in the 1770s. Its main product was sugar cane on thousands of acres, with the main house built on a level plane with the Mississippi River (without the levee). Our meeting encompassed one and a half days of traveling back in time and strolling through the lush and extensive gardens. At the time of the meeting, the river was almost at flood stage height on the levee, and the ships and barges were in full view as they traveled up and down the river. The Capital Area Alliance treated Alliance members to a guided tour of the home and some of the beautiful gardens with reflections about plantation life in the earlier years. Appropriately, one of the feature speakers was "The Herb Lady," who had sample dishes made from herbs for health and medicinal purposes.
The medical student recipients of the AMA Foundation-LA Alliance scholarships in attendance were Tulane student, Lori Guillot, accompanied by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Guillot; LSU-Shreveport, Shannon Berryhill, who was accompanied by her parents, Drs. Brett and Lucie Berryhill; and LSU-New Orleans, Carrie Spangler. Dr. F. Scott Kennedy, assistant dean of student admissions and professor of biochemistry, represented LSU School of Medicine-Shreveport.
