The LSMS established the Educational and Research Foundation for the purpose of funding educational programs like CME, scholarships, and other activities to enhance the educational opportunities for physicians and medical students in Louisiana.
Philip H. Jones, MD Scholarship Program
The P.H. Jones, MD Memorial Scholarships Fund awards annual scholarships to financially needy medical students attending Louisiana’s three medical schools. An attempt is made to divide these scholarships among the three institutions.
CME Program
The ERF CME Program is accredited to provide educational opportunities for physicians in Louisiana to obtain AMA Physician’s Recognition Award Category 1 credit for participating in educational activities. Its mission is to "fill in the gaps" of other accredited programs in Louisiana, providing educational activities in areas that might not have the resources to provide local CME. The ERF also joint sponsors activities with the LSMS and component medical societies to assure quality educational programs for Louisiana physicians.
Twelve (12) hours of continuing medical education (CME) credit is provided free to LSMS members through the Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society each year. Find out more...
Medical Student Support
Each year, pending approval from its Board of Directors, the LSMS ERF provides designated funding to the LSMS Medical Student Section (LSMS MSS). This funding enables the LSMS MSS to send 3 Delegates and 3 Alternates to the annual and interim meetings of the American Medical Association's Medical Student Section (AMA MSS). The AMA MSS meets twice each year for its national meetings, held in conjunction with the AMA House of Delegates. These meetings give students the opportunity to meet and participate in shaping the future health care environment. These meetings offer medical students educational programs that complement their medical school curriculum. They also provide opportunities for medical students to create policy on national health care issues and gain the satisfaction of making a difference in their state and community.
Resident/Fellow Support
Each year, pending approval from its Board of Directors, the LSMS ERF provides designated funding to the LSMS Resident/Fellow Section (LSMS RFS). This funding enables the LSMS RFS to send 3 Delegates and 3 Alternates to the annual and interim meetings of the American Medical Association's Resident/Fellow Section (AMA RFS). The AMA RFS meets twice each year for its national meetings, held in conjunction with the AMA House of Delegates. The AMA RFS was created to represent and advocate for resident and fellow physicians and to train young physician leaders. With the support of LSMS RFS members, the AMA RFS fights to improve working conditions, reform America's health care system, improve medical education, and create tools to help resident and fellow physicians succeed both personally and professionally.
