Professional Advocacy
Since 1975 lobbyists in the Department of Governmental Affairs have
fought to keep the malpractice cap (Act
817) in place. They provide LSMS members legislative
and governmental advocacy, act as a liaison between physicians and
lawmakers, and regularly interact with state regulatory agencies.
Representation on many state boards, committees and tasks forces within
government is also provided to members.
Legal Activities & Support
The
Department of Legal Affairs provides LSMS members a resource for legal
information and guidance, coordinates legal activities to benefit the
membership, and acts as a liaison to the
Louisiana State
Board of Medical Examiners. Ongoing legal support continues to be
provided to the membership after having joined class action lawsuits
filed in Louisiana state court against four of the largest
health plans in the state. Aetna and CIGNA have agreed to a settlement.

website in the Members Only section.
Continuing Medical Education
12 or
more hours of continuing medical education (CME) credit is provided free
to LSMS members through the Journal of the LSMS, a $300 value.
LSMS members can earn CME credit at their own convenience without having
to leave their practice. The LSMS
Educational and Research Foundation, is accredited to designate AMA PRA Category 1
credit for educational activities for physicians.
Public Relations
The Department of
Public Affairs provides media relations and communications on behalf of
physicians and patients, presents a positive image of the profession
with the media and the public, and works with statewide media to address
healthcare issues from the physician's perspective. It also produces the
publications listed below, keep LSMS members abreast of the latest
information on professional issues.
Medical School Scholarships
The
LSMS Educational and Research Foundation is responsible for the P. H.
Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to needy
medical students attending Louisiana medical schools.
Products & Services including insurance products, human resource and
communication services, educational events and discounts on car rental
and leasing are available to the membership through
LSMS
