The Department of Public Affairs serves as the communications arm of the LSMS, providing publications and other informational resources, including the LSMS web site, the Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society, and Capsules newsletter, for or on behalf of the Society's members.

This department is the Society’s primary liaison with the news media. In addition to responding to media requests for information, providing background materials, or recommending physicians to be interviewed for news stories, the department prepares regular and timely news releases, special reports and letters to the editor on important medical issues and topics.

The department also assists with public affairs efforts of the component societies throughout the state. Information on developing and promoting speakers’ bureaus and physician referral services are available to each component society, as are consulting and staff assistance for local public relations projects.
